When we got up on Sunday, the weather had changed overnight.. It was raining hard, with lot of breeze and snow storms were forecast for our return routes... We had initially planned to ride the dunes in the morning, but now that it was out of the question, we decided to get a headstart for our return journey. We left at 8:30 and close to Eugene, Dada and Vahini headed north towards Seattle, and Ashish and I headed south towards California.
We took a short stop at Central point to pick up some of Oregon's famous blue cheese at the Rogue Creamery and for some gas and food. When we got back on the road, we hit a little traffic close to Ashland and saw signs requiring us to use chains on our car tyres. Ashish and I were both anxious since we had never used chains before. As we approached the California border, we got some snow flurries, but fortunately, we did not have to use the chains. As we drove into California, we saw the bright sun welcoming us in typical California fashion. But our glee was short lived, coz within 10 miles, we were in the middle of a snow storm!!
It was snowing pretty hard and the landscape that we had passed just a few days ago, was all covered in snow. For the next couple of hours, it was slow and tense driving, as we crossed our fingers and trudged ahead... one mile at a time.. Dada and Vahini also encountered a huge snow storm as they entered Seattle. Both couples reached our destinations at around 4:30.. safe and sound.
Ashish and I halted at Redding where we stayed at Shobakka and Aravind maam's place. After a delicious Mexican dinner and visiting with the Patels, we called it a night.
We didn't realize how tired we were from the driving till we tried to get up the next morning.. we postponed our departure to LA by an hour to catch some more sleep. Since we were heading back on Monday, we evaded the holiday traffic. We covered the 580 miles home in 9 hours.
Though it was a lot of driving, we had a good time- thanks to the good weather and the great company! :-)
