On Saturday, after checking out of the motel, we headed for the Wildlife Safari, located about 6 miles south of Roseburg. The Safari encompasses 600 acres of land in which animals from 3 continents roam about freely. and through which you can drive through in your vehicle. In the African section, we saw giraffes, zebras, a Rhino and lions.. in the America section, we saw American bison, Llamas, American bald eagle and Roosevelt Elk... in the Asia section, we saw Tibetian Yak, monkeys, deer and elephants. It was a fun time and it took us almost 2 hours driving through the entire park and enjoying the animals.
After lunch at Taco Bell (This one was special... it had a nice view!!) we started for the Oregon coast. This was another beautiful drive through small towns... some of them having a population of 170 people... and along side the river. We reached the Umpqua Lighthouse State Park at around 3:30. We had reserved a rustic cabin and it was really nice. It had a double bed and a futon, with matresses, good heat, a table and 4 chairs and electrical outlets. It was very clean and the deck overlooked Lake Marie.
We then went to explore the area... we got a beautiful view of the Pacific, past the sand dunes, from near the Umpqua light house. We even saw a triangle in the sea where oysters are harvested. We wanted to ride the sand dunes on ATVs, but it was already getting dark, and the rental closed for the day. So we took a walk on the beach and enjoyed a lovely sunset.
Next we went to Winchester bay and did a little souvinier shopping. For dinner, we went to Crabby Cafe. This is a very small place.. might seat upto 30 people at a time. But the decor is very inviting, the service is pleasent and the food- is the best we had the whole trip. The clam chowder was very tasty, the crab cakes were yummy and the cod with cajun seasoning.... just perfect. After being stuffed with these delicacies, we headed back to the cabin.
We spent the rest of the evening playing cards and chit-chatting. By the time we had called it a night, it had begun raining.
